Get the layout right
- Keep it simple - no more than 2 pages.
- Avoid a fancy font and keep it simples with Times New Roman or Arial.
- Use side 12 for text and headings size 14
- Don’t use first person – that means no I
Where to begin
- Add your name, contact number and an email address
- If applicable add in any more personal details you think are relevant
Who are you?
Personal background
- Write a short paragraph (about 2 sentences) that really show the reader how amazing you are!
- Top Tip: Imagine another person was describing you in action
- Example: A purposeful and dynamic project manager with a flair for quickly taking advantage of new initiatives.
Where have you worked?
Work experience
- Start with your most recent employment and work backwards in time.
- Add in the start and end dates
- Top Tip: begin each sentence of work activity with a “doing” verb
- E.g. Activated…. Co-ordinated…..Organised…. etc.
- Give a brief list of the most noticeable responsibilities you carried out in each role.
What if you have no work experience?
- Cite examples from your degree e.g. 1) Worked in a team to deliver a group presentation, produced the slides, organised the running order. 2) Assisted peers in understanding content, supported peers in providing useful revision tips etc.
- Think laterally, there should always be something from your degree programme that can be articulated to highlight what you have carried out.
Where have you studied?
Education and Training
- Start with your most recent educational and training
- Add in the start and end dates institution and course.
- Indicate grades and if currently unfulfilled write “Working towards, date expected to complete DD-MM-YYYY.”
- If it is relevant to the job you are applying for you can add specific units in your degree
- But be aware this may take you over the 2 page rule!
- Don’t forget to list any externally-certified professional course.
Have you done any other courses?
Short Courses (if applicable)
- In this section talk about any achievements
- For example: Emergency First Aid, or a language learnt alongside your studies
- Use same format as for education above.
Have you done any volunteering?
Section 5 - Voluntary Experience (if applicable)
- This section is often well received by employers.
- Make sure you include dates, organisations and activities similar to the way your layout appears under section 2.
What do you do in your spare time?
Section 6 – Miscellany
- Add in your hobbies and past times such as dancing, playing musical instruments, sport
- Top tip don’t write making Tik Tok videos or going to YOLO
Who can write your reference?
Section 7 – References
- Avoid adding “Upon request”.
- It is better to include 2 references. This could be your current employer or personal tutor
Remember
- Get someone to proof read your work!
- Have fun in creating and modifying.
- Keep your CV up to date and modify it from time to time
- When you add entries it may be necessary to reduce some details previously shown otherwise you might just go over those 2 pages.
- Be proud of your CV and don’t feel that something is not important because it seemed like a low profile task. In the eyes of the reader it might just be what they want.
- Read the application and check they don’t want a covering letter alongside your CV
Make your CV work for you – after all you deserve it to.
