Read about Rebecca's ways to conquering feelings of loneliness, homesickness and how she knows she's never alone.
Homesickness is a curious feeling. You do not feel it when you are singing your heart out in Y Plas or when you are laughing at your flatmates latest attempt at trying to cook an edible meal. It suddenly hits you and you find yourself crying your eyes out to ‘Slipping through my fingers’ as you watch Mamma Mia for the hundredth time at 2am in the morning (we’ve all been there).
You find yourself crying your eyes out (...) as you watch Mamma Mia for the hundredth time.
Whether you are a Fresher or in your final year, homesickness affects everyone, along with loneliness, anxiety and depression, to name but a few. It is important to know that regardless of age, course, sexuality etc, you are NOT alone.
What do I do?
This World Mental Health Day I encourage you to reach out to those around you. Maybe it’s the neighbour you haven’t introduced yourself to yet or the flatmate who has locked themselves in their room for a little too long. Talk to your friends and family honestly and ask how they are. Remember, the University has an amazing team of counsellors ready to help you if you want to book an appointment.
To those who attended the Freshers’ Fairs last week alone, know that I am SO proud of you. Doing things on your own takes strength but you don’t have to do things alone anymore if you don’t want to! Whether you are a Taylor Swift fanatic or a keen Netball player, there are so many amazing societies out there for you to join! Have a look at the events going on during the week and have fun! Most importantly, reach out.
'The sun is still in the sky and shining above you'
So, the next time you watch Mamma Mia at 2am, I want you to be singing along to ‘Chiquita’ and know that ‘the sun is still in the sky and shining above you.'
I’m always contactable at MentalHealthOfficer@cardiff.ac.uk and if you want to join any casual social events I will be running later in the year or want to help volunteer to run some events, you can sign up to join my association here.
