The Police Student Volunteering scheme was set up to help South Wales Police carry out various crime prevention campaigns and high high-visibility. This is a unique opportunity to gain insight into what it’s like to be part of South Wales Police.

This project is a partnership between SVC, South Wales Police, Cardiff University, Cardiff Volunteering, Cardiff Metropolitan University, the University of South Wales and their Students' Unions.

Activities include:

  • Police walkabouts, where volunteers work directly with Police Constables (PCs) and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) visiting houses offering crime prevention advice around burglary and marking valuable items in the houses with security pens.
  • Police ‘Safety Bus’, where volunteers assist the police to highlight individuals who appear vulnerable to crime, ensuring they are taken home safely and/or provided with advice about how to avoid crime.
  • Property marking sessions, during which volunteers help with giving students advice on how to keep their belongings safe and secure.
  • Response shifts, answering 999 calls in police cars … and more!

This project requires specific vetting procedures organised by South Wales Police, plus project-specific training. There are usually at least two activities per month for the student volunteers to get involved with.
