Design for Difference – EWB Speaker Event

Saturday 16 February 2019, 11am - 1pm

Engineering Forum, Queens Buildings, CF24 3AA

Event Information

Have you ever wondered about the social responsibilities of an engineer? Or of a scientist? As students, we attend numerous lectures and make friends along the way. We network and aspire to play a relevant role in the industry we plan to build our career on. But, is it possible that there is more to professional life than this?

We will have three amazing speakers at our Design for Difference event, who have spent time working abroad and helped developing communities. This will be in the Forum in Engineering from 11am until 1pm on Saturday 16th February, there’ll be light refreshments throughout, as well as a catered lunch break! Come along and be inspired by John, Kara and Louis.

Follow EWB Cardiff on Facebook and check our SU website for updates on the event.

Our Speakers

John McGuckin is a Civil Engineer with Stantec, who will be speaking about his experience on placement with Engineers Without Borders in Ghana and how what he learnt abroad influenced his return to the UK water industry.

Kara Brussen works for Arup and is going to give a talk about the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Well-being of Future Generations Act and how they apply to projects in the built environment.

Louis Rivet is a recent Cardiff University engineering graduate, who will tell us about his EWB junior fellowship placement this past summer in the Philippines. There he worked with EWB UK and their partner organisation SIBAT on the development of micro hydro-power systems and conducted socio-economic surveys of rural communities.
