Fequently Asked Questions

This trip is organised by the Students' Union, equating to very low prices, great value and organisation you can trust!

1. Do I need a visa for this trip?

UK and EU nationals do not require a visa for the trip. But will require valid ID to prove that they are a UK/EU national.

Students from outside the UK/EU may require a passport. If you are a citizen of a country whose nationals need a visa to enter Ireland and you have a valid UK visa or residence permit, you may be required to have a valid visa before you arrive in Ireland. You must seek independent advice before purchasing your ticket.

2. Is this trip suitable for children/families? Is there a reduced rate for children?

No - children are not permitted on this trip. Although the Students' Union are planning future trips with a set number of family rooms and exploring other options that would make our trips more inclusive for families and young children, this Society trip isn't suitable for them.

3. I'm having trouble signing up online. What do I do?

One possible reason for this is that the Students' Union finance system becomes much more strict for products exceeding £100. If your address, or any given details, don't exactly match the ones orginally given when you signed up for the card/account... the system will reject the payment. It is also possible to pay in person at the finance office of the Students' Union.

4. Do I need to have a passport for this trip?

Yes, it is strongly advisable. The Common Travel Area agreement between the UK and Ireland means that there are no passport controls in operation for Irish and UK citizens travelling between the 2 countries. You do not need to have a passport in order to enter the other country. However, all air and sea carriers require some form of identification and some regard a passport as the only valid identification. Immigration authorities may also conduct spot checks and require you to have valid official photo-identification which shows your nationality. As you are being asked to prove that you are an Irish or UK citizen who is entitled to avail of the Common Travel Area arrangements, it is strongly advisable to travel with your passport.

5. What is the deadline for this trip?

There is no specific deadline for this trip, though there are only a limited number of tickets available. For international students you should ensure enough time to apply for any visas that are appropriate.

6. I want to come on this trip but it's displaying as product limit reached. What can I do.

Email Giveitago@Cardiff.ac.uk, quoting 'Give it a Go Dublin Trip' and request to add yourself to the waiting list incase we get more tickets or someone drops out.

Or if you have any other enquiries please email GiveitaGo@cardiff.ac.uk and we'll get back to you within 1-2 working days!

Students' Union International Student Visa Guidance

Visit the Cardiff University Information pages for additional information.

While your UK visa will cover travel to Northern Ireland (part of the UK), nationals of certain countries will require a visa to travel to the Republic of Ireland.

Check the Embassy of Ireland website to find out whether you need a visa and how to apply.

You can generally apply for most vissa within three months of the inteneded date of travel. Assuming there are no problems, the application itself can take up to 15 working days to process - but longer if you supply incompete documents or the embasy has a query with your application.

The application itself generally has a fee attached to it of between £40 - £60.

Visa Documents the Students' Union can provide

The application will require you to supply a number of documents, some of which the Students' Union can supply for you. You should research this thoroughly yourself before make the application to avoid wasted time and money.

  1. Valid signed passport, valid for 3 months after intended return from Ireland.
  2. Completed and signed visa application form (two signatures and signature same as in passport)
  3. One photograph (meeting all photo requirements)
  4. Original and copy of valid UK residence permit (valid for 3 months after intended return from Schengen)
  5. Copy of applicant’s passport (holder page, signature page and copies of all used Schengen visas in the last 2 years)

  9. UK current account bank statements (last 3 months), including name and address of account holder
  10. Valid travel insurance, policy minimum EUR 30,000, with full details of applicant and cover dates.

N.B. You will have to contact your University registry for proof of student status - the Students' Union cannot provide this for you.

Documents we can provide to you if requested:

  1. Confirmed travel ticket, showing names of persons travelling.
  2. Confirmed hotel reservation.
  3. Travel itinerary with all transport and accommodation details, signed by the Trip Leader and the Students' Union President.
