Are politicians always dodging the student issues?

Let's hit the issues head on by registering to vote

On 5th May 2016, you will have the opportunity to vote for the candidates who will represent you in the National Assembly for Wales.

The National Assembly for Wales represents anyone living in Wales and has power to make decisions and laws in areas such as education, training, health services, housing, sport, and recreation. As a student you live in Wales for at least 9 months of the year, which means that the laws made by the Assembly will have a big impact on you.

Who is eligible to vote?

To vote in the upcoming election, you must be registered to vote and meet the following criteria:

  • 18 years of age or over on polling day
  • a British citizen, a qualifying Commonwealth citizen, or a citizen of the European Union
  • resident in Wales
  • not be subject to any legal incapacity to vote

Where do I register to vote?

On Tuesday 8th March, we hosted a voter registration day in the Main Building car park opposite the Students' Union. We registered hundreds of people on the day, and offered everyone the chance to take a ride on our political dodgems.

If you missed the event, don't forget you can still register online by visiting gov.uk/register-to-vote. You have until the 18th April to register.

How is the Assembly elected?

You have two votes in a National Assembly for Wales election. In the constituency ballot, you choose the candidate you want to represent you directly. In the regional ballot, you choose from a list of party or independent candidates to represent your region.

Referendum on the UK's membership of the European Union
