Airsoft is a combat simulation sport similar to paintball, but without the ridiculous cost or bruises, and where better to take up Airsoft than with the largest Airsoft Society in the UK! Unlike paintball, Airsoft uses realistic-imitation-firearms. They are often manufactured in spec and real weight for simulation use with military personnel to train and civilians to participate in Airsoft with. For example, US Troops in Kuwait used Airsoft as part of their training for the Iraq War. The equipment offers realistic appearance & operation, similar to those of real weapons. They also boast superior range and accuracy over a paintball gun as well as ammunition costing a hundred times less. While paintball guns are infamous for causing bruises Airsoft rounds travel faster but are significantly lighter projectiles, holding a thirteenth of the kinetic energy of a paintball, thus while you’ll certainly be aware of a hit, there will be no huge bruises.
Airsoft events take place on a huge variety of different sites, local to us is “Dragon Valley” which is situated on the active military base MOD Caerwent near Newport. This facility is used to train Police and Counter Terrorism forces. Other sites include “The Base”, a site on former RAF Yatesbury, a WW2 flight school with exercises focused around taking control of the officers’ mess and airstrip. Another site worth mentioning is “The Outpost”, a site entirely within a subterranean WW2 Land Rover “shadow-factory”, 200 feet below the ground, which is as cool as it sounds. All the kit you need, such as weapons, tactical gear, safety equipment etc. will be provided by the society so there is no need to spend a lot of money on gear!
In addition to our weekly trips to sites mentioned above, we have our big standalone events, including our visit to the annual National Airsoft Festival, a 3-day airsoft festival with almost 2000 attendees on site each year! CUAS also runs our very own military simulation events, CUAS Ops, at the Caerwent M.O.D. Our most recent one was Operation Carthage, which saw 40 players battle it out in teams representing Russian and NATO forces.
The society also has a competitive side, having a 1stand 2ndinter university team that plays the other societies around the UK. We were 2017/18 winners of the University Airsoft Championship and came 2nd in the 2016/17 event. Everyone is able to apply for the team but if competition is not your thing the society also caters for casual players. Airsoft is open and accessible to people of all genders, backgrounds and levels of fitness, so why not give it a go?
