Web Development and Data

The Web Development and Data Protection Department provides the support and technical 'know how' to ensure our website and web related services run securely and intuitively. Our department also has the overall responsibility of managing the most engaged communication platform ‘cardiffstudents.com’.

As the custodians of the website and related customer, student and all stakeholder data, it is vital that we preform our duties using current industry standards and within legal regulations (including GDRP). We champion new technology and design methods where the user experience is always considered, to do so we ensure all team members attend digital conferences and are always exploring new ideas.

We're a small, friendly team that is tasked with finding creative digital solutions to every day challenges, we work hard to strive to be the best and our website (the most engaged Students' Union website in the country) is testament to our success.

Typical Roles

Web Developer

This role is responsible for carrying out the day to day tasks of the department that range from coding backend systems in languages such as PHP, Python, database creation and integrations using SQL to frontend interactions using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. The role also plays a key part in the development of new systems and holds a seat in our design committee.

Head of Web and Data

The post holder is responsible for running the department, planning new developments and providing strategic direction for the team. Along with the usual management duties the post holder is tasked with being the Data Protection Officer of the whole organisation. The Head of Web and Data will also help out with the day to day software coding for new and existing systems.

What we're looking for

As a small department with an important, responsible role we require you to bring multiple skills in multiple programming languages. You will need to possess a real passion for coding and demonstrate the ability to blend creativity with logic. Customer service skills are a big benefit as you will be communicating with all stakeholders, whether via email providing users with login support or over the telephone dealing with transaction issues. You will need to take pride in your work as it will be seen by hundreds of thousands of people.
