Elections explained
Your Students’ Union holds elections in order to allow you to choose your student representatives for the next academic year. There are 7 full time elected officers who will work on a full time basis, taking a break from their studies or immediately after graduation, and 8 part time elected officers who will work on a part time basis alongside their ongoing studies. They are your voice and act as your representatives in the union, university and wider community, fighting for you on institutional, local and national level.
Alongside these positions we also elect a Scrutiny Committee Chair who helps you as students hold the officers to account and delegates to attend NUS Wales and NUS UK conferences on behalf of Cardiff students’.
These manifestos contain the ideas and principles of the candidates that want to lead your union next year and represent your voice. Ask yourself if they display key creative and communicative skills that you would like to see in someone who is representing you and your needs.
If you don’t feel any of the candidates standing in a position have the qualities you feel are valuable, or you do not agree with their manifesto, you can vote RON. RON stands for “re-open nominations”. This means, should RON be more popular than any of the other candidates, no-one would be elected to this role and the nominations for the role would re-open, giving the opportunity to find the right person to lead your union.
What are full time elected officers?
Full time elected officers are all former or current students elected by the student body. For twelve months they form the full component of the executive committee as well as become members of the Students’ Union Board of Directors and Board of Trustees.
It is their role to:
-
Represent Cardiff University students on an institutional, local and national level. Ensuring that students can get the most out of their university life.
-
Lobby and work in partnership with the universities management to ensure the institution continues to go from strength to strength with the best interest of students at heart.
-
Lead a £7,000,000 organisation, arguably the best of its kind in the UK, in a manner that ensures that students needs are at the centre of everything we do.
As well as a number of general elected officer duties each elected candidate will have a specific area of responsibility which is detailed in their position title throughout this manifesto booklet.

What are part time elected officers?
Part time elected officers are all current students elected by the student body. Alongside their continued studies, they form part of the Students’ Unions executive committee as well as taking up a place on the union’s governing body, Student Council.
Their roles include:
-
To represent and improve the university experience for a specific number of minority student groups.
-
To lead the unions ethical and environmental policy and campaigns.
-
To work with the full time officers as part of the executive team to ensure that union policy takes into account the varied needs of the specific student groups that they represent.
