Hi, my name is Scott Pigott and I am the Athletic Union President. I was elected in March to be a full-time Director of the Union for one year. Along with the five other elected officers, I oversee the day-to-day running of the Students' Union. I am personally responsible for all matters relating to sport, encouraging both participation and performance by providing opportunity and pursuing excellence.
I oversee the running of the 60 sports clubs at Cardiff University, along with the Intra Mural Games (IMG) program. There are well over 5,000 students playing sport at Cardiff and so my role is very varied - I organise events, allocate budgets and set the strategic direction for the Athletic Union.
I help students to establish new sports clubs and support existing ones in any way I can. I also work closely with the University's Sport and Exercise department to promote health and fitness-related issues, with the aim of providing the best possible sport and physical activity service to students.
Along with Union staff, I organise the annual Varsity event in April, where our sports clubs compete against our local rival, Swansea University. Varsity takes 8 months of preparation and is one of the highlights of the student calendar, attracting over 7,000 spectators throughout the day. In May, we celebrate the achievements of our students and sports clubs with the Athletic Union Awards Ball.
Throughout the year, I also lead the 'Invest in Sport' campaign, pressuring the University to invest in more and better sports facilities for students and staff. The highlight of the campaign is the annual Fun Run in February, where hundreds of students take part in a 5km run around Bute Park, all wearing the distinctive 'Invest in Sport' t-shirts.
