What does your job actually entail? What do you see as your main responsibilities?

I sit on a lot of University committees to make sure that student opinion is presented on academic issues. I oversee and aid the projects that the non-sabbatical officers in my charge are running. I try to improve student awareness of the welfare services available to them, and in turn try to improve these services.

What do you think the job demands in terms of personal attributes or skills?

You need to be confident and be happy to present student opinions to members of Union and University staff. You need good interpersonal skills and the ability to lead a team and help others progress.

What do you enjoy most about the job?

Making changes, pointing things out to others which would have otherwise gone unnoticed. I enjoy being part of a team and working together to improve things.

What are the challenges/obstacles you face?

Realising that in one year you can only achieve so much. It is hard to prioritise your campaigns and projects and constantly have to re-evaluate what you think would benefit students the most.

What have you achieved since coming into your position?

I have helped to improve the current Course Rep system, a change which will hopefully carry on into next year. I have organised ShAg week to publicise the ShAg society and the provision of free contraception in the Union.

What's next?

Plans to develop the Heath Park Forums and make sure they carry on into next year, also want to continue the development of a Course Rep on-line forum for sharing best practice. I would also like to look into the current bursary system and see if there is any way we can improve it.

Would you recommend your role? If so, why?

Yes.  It is a brilliant way to change things that you are unhappy with in the University. Your opinion holds a lot of weight and it is an amazing feeling to be in a situation where your views are respected and listened to. It is character building, and a great feeling to know that you are helping others.
