What does your job actually entail? What do you see as your main responsibilities?
My main responsibilities are to edit gair rhydd and Quench. Each week I work with a team of student editors to bring the newspaper and magazine together. I offer ideas and guidance for the section editors and offer support when using publishing software. I then sub-edit the pages and make any necessary amendments. As well as gair rhydd and Quench, I also work alongside the Station Manager of Xpress Radio to ensure that the radio station runs smoothly.
What do you think the job demands in terms of personal attributes or skills?
You must be competent and confident when using MACs and the relevant publishing software that we use. It is important that you have good people skills to encourage people week-on-week to keep the newspaper and magazine in production. Excellent communication skills are essential. It is vital that you are quick-thinking and creative in order to find solutions to problems that arise.
What do you enjoy most about the job?
I love working with a group of dedicated volunteers towards a shared goal: producing a newspaper and magazine for all the students at Cardiff University to enjoy.
What are the challenges/obstacles you face?
Exhaustion. Deadline days are long and you rarely leave the office before 1am. After a deadline night I have to be back in work at 9am to get the magazine/newspaper to the printers.
What have you achieved since coming into your role?
I have made several changes to the fundamentals of gair rhydd and Quench including a re-structure of sections and introducing new, more efficient software.
Would you recommend your role? If so, why?
My job is fantastic. It is a lot of hard work, but is incredibly rewarding. It is a fantastic opportunity to work alongside students.
