What does your job actually entail? What do you see as your main responsibilities?
My main responsibilities involve looking after the running of Xpress Radio, trying to get as much exposure as possible and providing a successful medium of student media.
What do you think the job demands in terms of personal attributes or skills?
In terms of skills you need to be able to people and time manage. with Xpress radio a lot needs to be done at the same time and its important that you can delegate jobs and be able to manage you time efficiently. you also need to have a creative mind to think of ways to get exposure out there to the student masses!
What do you enjoy most about the job?
Definitely a sense of achievement when you can walk through the union and hear xpress being played, and hearing your members learning the trade of broadcasting. hearing other students talking about Xpress also brings a smile to my face!
What are the challenges/obstacles you face?
Managing time in Xpress radio and time doing coursework! its very difficult thing to do and you find you can get carried away. The licensing of Xpress radio is ealso a very complicated process, and took me quite a while to get to grips with it.
What have you achieved since coming into your position?
Successful application for FM (87.7fm) and digital broadcasting in March. as well as giving our members the opportunity to learn how radio works. I feel that Xpress Radio has provided Cardiff students with a service this year and really can now hold its own in Cardiff Student Media.
What's next?
Huge launch party in Solus on the 1st March for FM and Digital, as well as various events being covered such as Go Global, the Elections and Vartsity. These are all going to demand a vast amount of planning - but I can't wait!
Would you recommend your role? If so, why?
Of course I would! Its something really fanastic to be able to say that you have been in charge of radio station, not only providing a learning environment for your members but also entertainment for cardiff students.
