What does your job actually entail? What do you see as your main responsibilities?

My job at the moment consists mainly of helping with welfare campaigns, especially those which affect women, such as SHAG (Sexual Health Awareness) week.  A main responsibility is obviously to deal with any issues of inequality or gender discrimination as they arise, although this does not seem to have been much of an issue so far this year.  To raise awareness of women's issues, for example I am currently planning a campaign to promote the work of the Dignity Period campaign

What do you think the job demands in terms of personal attributes or skills?

Organisation is important, especially for non-sabb positions, as you will have to continue with university work while doing your other duties.  The ability to talk to people and get support for the things you want to achieve, confidence is an important aspect of the job.  You have to be prepared to keep trying to organise the things you want.  Obviously a passion for the job and its principles is important

What do you enjoy most about the job?

Being able to organise campaigns, and actually feel you are making a difference to the student body.  Interacting with the other sabbs ande non-sabbs for discussion and campaigning.

What are the challenges/obstacles you face?

It can be difficult to remain on top of university work if you're involved with something you feel strongly about in the Union.  When you first come to the role, it is difficult to gain the confidence needed to be productive in your job.

What have you achieved since coming into your role?

.Helped to organise a successful Sexual Health Awareness Week and Healthy Week.  Attended NUS Wales Winter Conference, and the NUS extraordinary conference.  Begun a campaign to promote the Dignity Period campaign in Cardiff.

What's next?

International Women's day 'girls' night in' event. Dignity period Campaign Launch and fundraising event.  Continue with Welfare issues in the Union.

Would you recommend your role? If so, why?

Yes, definitely. It's a brilliant way to change or get involved with things you feel passionately about. Working in the Union makes you see how the student body can actually change the way their Union is run.
