Cardiff Students' Union Cracks Down on Drink Spiking

Cardiff may have been hitting the headlines for all the wrong reasons regarding drink spiking, but the student population have never been safer. Cardiff University Students' Union (CUSU) has become one of the first venues in Cardiff to take active measures against drink spiking by stocking the “Spika Stoppa”.
Spika StoppaThe Spika Stoppa is a small device developed by a small South Wales business, and was launched in April this year. The Spika Stoppa is put into the neck of drinks bottles, making it impossible for any would-be-attacker to slip a drug into the drink.

CUSU Bars Manager, Keith Owen, said:
“We are committed to provide a safe environment where our students can socialise. By stocking this new device and drink testing kits we are doing everything we can to ensure the safety of students within our building. I would, however, urge students to continue being vigilant when they are out.”

The initiative has been endorsed by Cardiff Police. PC Bob Keohane, College Liaison Community Officer, said:
“We are glad to see Cardiff Students' Union taking these extra steps to increase student safety. Any scheme like this that increases safety is a good thing, and we would encourage the use of devices like this throughout Cardiff City Centre.”

Cardiff Students' Union will be monitoring the success of the product and will continue to take its student's welfare as key in providing an exceptional student experience.
