Partners urge Cardiff to prepare for clean city judges
Keep Cardiff TidyThe Students' Union-backed Keep Cardiff Tidy campaign is calling on the people of Cardiff to help the city put on its best face for the judges of Clean Britain Awards 2007, who arrive in the city on 4th November.

The British Cleaning Council has drawn up a top 10 of finalists for this year's Clean Britain Awards and its judges will be making both announced and unannounced visits to the city. Following its short-listing, a team from Cardiff Council have been interviewed by the judges as part of the adjudication process.
Help - Play Your Part

Students' Union Vice President, Ed Jones said: “The fact that Cardiff has made the top ten is a great achievement, and our students will lead the way to ensure victory. We are proud of our involvement in this project with the Council and look forward to seeing everyone playing their part and working together with us in this community-wide effort to improve the cleanliness of Cardiff.
Everyone can make a difference by joining in litter-picks and, of course, at home by using the litter bins provided and putting their waste out on the kerb-side on the correct collection day.”

Cardiff last achieved top ten clean city status in the 2005 awards, the nationally judged competition, which was won by The City of London and in 2003 by the City of Westminster.

GET IT OUT FOR CARDIFF WINS AWARD

Keep Cardiff Tidy has won a Tidy Wales Award for the Get it out for Cardiff Initiative, which removed over 70 tonnes of waste from Cardiff's streets during the student exodus over the summer. The £500 award was presented by the Environment Minister, Carwyn Jones at the Wales Millennium Centre on Wednesday.

The Students' Union drove the campaign on the streets amongst the student body and will do so again in 2007. The campaign featured TV's Queens of Clean, Aggie and Kim from the Channel 4 series, How Clean Is Your House?
Ed Jones, Vice President of the Cardiff Students Union, said: “It is important that all students take note of this initiative, as it is important that students leave the city with minimum disruption to other residents. The majority of students took advantage of the scheme and we hope everyone will play their part this year.”

Students' Union Adopt-A-Garden

As part of its bid to Keep Cardiff Tidy, the Students' Union has adopted the Temple of Peace memorial garden. On Friday November 3rd, the Union's Sabbatical Officers, together with the SVC, began work clearing and gardening in the memorial area located behind the Welsh Centre for International Affairs.

President, Joe Al-Khayat, Vice President Ed Jones and Education & Welfare Officer Kate Monaghan stepped out of the office and grabbed rakes and litter-pickers to help the cause. Together with the SVC Manager and Assistant Managers, Andrea Dare and Devinda De Silva, they lead the way in highlighting how the Students' Union can make an extremely valuable contribution to its local community and environment. The team will be returning throughout the year to ensure that the area is maintained.

Students Plea to Christmas Shoppers

Keep Cardiff Tidy, in partnership with Cardiff University Students' Union, is always looking for more inventive and exciting ways to spread the message.

Shoppers in Cardiff Centre have been reminded that the judges for the Cleanest City Awards are on the loose.
Two volunteers from Cardiff Students' Union took to the streets in sandwhich boards as part of the Keep Cardiff Tidy Campaign. Rebecca Johnson and Rachel Thomas won a great deal of attention for their efforts and the city keeps its fingers crossed as the result approaches.
