Out of hours they can leave a message on the answer phone or e-mail them on pauline.warner@new-tr.wales.nhs.uk or andrea.taylor@new-tr.wales.nhs.uk .

On arrival students should report to the hospital switchboard which is open 24 hours. The switchboard is just through the main hospital entrance and on the right next to the Cardiology Department. Someone on the main reception desk will give directions if necessary.

Accommodation and First day information:

Students will need to go to the switchboard office where there will be 2 envelopes waiting for them. One contains accommodation keys and directions to their room and the other is a welcome pack from the Undergraduate Department. This pack contains instructions about reporting arrangements for the first day of the placement. An induction morning is held at the Wrexham Medical Institute on the first morning of the placement. The Institute is across the car park opposite the main entrance. Accommodation is available from tea-time on the day before the placement begins.

What Students need to bring:

Bedding, cutlery and cooking utensils are provided. If students intend on exploring the local area they will need their own personal gear, sleeping bags, waterproofs and walking boots are not provided.

Facilities:

At the moment students are allocated doctor's accommodation and mostly they are with other students. All accommodation is self-contained with appropriate cooking and bathroom facilities. Many units are unsuite. There is a launderette adjacent to the doctors' accommodation. At Wrexham we like students to be fully integrated into the life of the hospital and this includes mixing with other medical staff (particularly junior doctors) as much as possible. Thus they share accommodation and all mess facilities available to doctors.

Common Room
The common room is situated in the Doctor's Mess. It has TV and computer facilities, hot and cold drinks machine, dining room, sandwich vending machine, quiet study room and seminar room.

Food
Breakfast is served free of charge by Thelma and Tracy in the Mess Dining Room each morning between 8am and 10am.

Gym
There are no on-site gym facilities but there many available in town (five minutes walk away). Discount for medical staff (and students) have been negotiated. There is also and tennis centre and swimming pool both within ten minutes walk of the hospital.

On call rooms
On call rooms are available but as accommodation is on site this is not often necessary.

Library
Details are contained in the student handbook. Internet access, library cards, access to the building out of office hours etc are sorted out before the students' arrival and arrangements are explained during the induction morning.

Health
The Undergraduate office provides details of local GPs, Family Planning facilities etc. All students are swabbed for MRSA screening on arrival.

If a student falls ill, the Undergraduate Office should be informed and they ill contact a consultant. Students should also contact any of the junior doctors they are shadowing and who may be expecting them on wards etc. They have a strong support network set up and working well in Wrexham.

First day of placement:

Everything that the students need to know including who to report to, locker issues, opening times, timetables of clinical placements and teaching sessions etc, are ALL contained in the welcome pack that students will receive.

Social Life:

Wrexham is a busy town on the Welsh/English border. This means that students on placement will find that they are able to access facilities in nearby Chester (ten minutes by car) and there are good rail and bus links to Liverpool (forty minutes) and Manchester (one hour). They are forty minutes from the North Wales coast and an hour and a half from Snowdonia. Good shopping, theatres and sports facilities nearby.

What there is to do at the weekend
Wrexham has a local football and rugby club that are often in need of players. There are many fine walks and access to National Trust properties, as well as outdoor pursuits such as sailing and canoeing at nearby Bala. All facilities of the north Wales coast are easily accessed by the A55 and via local rail and bus links.

Other useful information:
The hospital is five minutes from the town centre, where the students can find all the facilities that they need including shops, supermarkets, banks and a cinema.

All information including out of hours emergency contact numbers, Pastoral support, Chaplin, local police station, local GPs can all be found in the Student Handbook which students will have access to as soon as they arrive.

The Hospital would like to reassure students that they should not be anxious about their stay in Wrexham as they will be well provided for and supported whilst they are here.
