We have been informed of two suspected measles cases in the Cardiff area who attend the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, but share accommodation blocks used by students from other Universities in Cardiff. Measles is highly contagious and is easily spread.
We are therefore writing to all students in Cardiff to warn them about this situation and to advise the following:
- If you have not had two MMR vaccinations, or are not sure if you have had these, please arrange for vaccination through your GP surgery in the usual manner.
- If you have not yet registered with a local GP, please ensure you do so now before you need to consult a doctor about illness.
- If you become ill with the signs and symptoms of measles, please do not put others at risk by attending public places, or travelling home using public transport. Seek advice from your GP if you are very unwell. Explain to your flatmates that you are unwell so that they can look out for you and check that you are OK.
Signs and symptoms of measles
- Initially fever, conjunctivitis, cough, runny nose
- A red blotchy rash that starts on the face after the third day of the first symptoms and spreads all over the body
- High fever and feeling very unwell
If you develop measles you should not attend lectures or public places until at least five days after the rash develops.
If you have any queries or need further advice, please do not hesitate to contact the Health Centre on 02920 874810.
