This page lists directions to, and details of, a handful of the best pubs in Cardiff. Our meetings are fortnightly, at a different pub. This page is updated to include each pub we visit, so it is slim now, but will grow as time goes on.
The Albany
The Albany, 105 Donald StreetOne of the finest Brains pubs in Cardiff, and the only one to serve a guest ale. Excellent beer quality and friendly staff. Worth the distance.
To get to the albany: The best way is either to find your way to Crwys Road and turn East, or to City Road and turn West. Head up Albany Road (the large shopping street at the junction of Crwys Road and City Road) and turn left onto Donald Street. The Albany is along there on the left.
The Cayo
The Cayo Arms, 36 Cathedral RoadCharming pub just the other side of town. Serves a fine range of Tomos Watkin ales, great for when you fancy a change from Brains! The food is also excellent, as is the atmosphere when the rugby is playing.
To get to the Cayo: Walk down Queen Street towards the castle. Carry on in a straigth line past the castle, past the Millennium Stadium and keep going over the river. You will reach a large traffic light junction with a Brains pub on one corner and the TUC offices on another. Turn right here onto Cathedral Road. The Cayo is a little way down, on the right hand side
The Central Bar
The Central Bar, 39 Windsor Place.Probably the nicest of the Wetherspoons in Cardiff. Loath as we are to admit that we visit Wetherspoons bars, they really are cheap and are almost the only place to get a pint that isn't from Brains. Non-smoking.
To get to the Central: Easy to find, next door to Barclays, just off Queen Street.
The Cottage
The Cottage, 25 St Marys Street.A lovely traditional Brains pub in the heart of town. Nice atmostphere and a good pint. Non-smoking.
To get to The Cottage: Another easy one - about halfway along St Mary's Street, on the town side of the street.
The Flora
The Flora, 136 Cathays Terrace.Definately a student pub, but certainly better than the Woodville and its ilk. Students can get discounts with their Red Card scheme, but the ony real ale included is SA.
To get to the Flora: Cathays Terrace is the large road heading north from the Law building. The Flora is about two thirds of the way up on the right. Easy to find, hence the popularity.
The Gower
The Gower: 29 Gwennyth Street.Another nice Brains pub, if a little basic. Can seem a little intimidating, but the staff are nice; honest! Unlike some other Brains pubs, this one actually serves Dark, and will often serve the seasonal.
To get to the Gower: From the Senghennydd Road entrance to the union, walk towards theWoodville Pub (away from town.) At the woody, the road will curve right 90degrees. Follow this road all the way to the major road at the top (Crwys Road.) Turn left here, and cross the road. Turn right two roads after the Co-op, onto Monthermer Road. Walk almost all the way up this street, then turn right into Gwennyth Street. Pub is on the left.
We meet in the lounge bar, which is the door on the RIGHT hand side of the pub.
