Joining Societies
Joining a society is also a great way for you to meet new people and form great friendships. Cardiff University boasts masses of different cultural, national, sporting, religious, academic and social societies. They provide the opportunity to try something new, virtually every week. Many societies, such as BACCUP and AIESEC, are charity based and offer the chance to volunteer your time and energy to a worthy cause. They work alongside the Student Volunteering Centre, which also encourages students to get involved in various worthy charities and to really give something back to the community.
Other societies, like the drama society (Act 1), or the numerous film and art societies, provide the chance to unleash your creative side whilst meeting likeminded people and making new friends. There are dozens of music societies catering for every taste, from death metal to hip hop and R'n'B, so you are bound to find something you like. There is also a live music society, which works tirelessly to put on gigs at the Students' union and features the newest sounds from the music industry.
There are many International Societies that reflect the multicultural environment of Cardiff University. These societies are ideal for combating homesickness, as wherever in the world you have travelled from, you are sure to find other students who share a common bond. Similarly, there are lots of Religious societies that provide new students with the chance to worship and express their religious beliefs.
Every course at University has a corresponding society. So, whether you study Physics or Philosophy, English or Engineering, you are guaranteed to find a society in which you can meet fellow course mates. These societies often organise high profile and popular social events like 'End of Year' and Christmas balls. Joining a course society gives you the opportunity to make new friends who are interested in the same area of study as you, and also the opportunity to share ideas and provide helpful advice. Whatever course you study, you can join any course society, so if you have an interest outside your degree, joining one can allow you the chance to explore new subjects.
Societies are not just about socialising, a number of Societies enter football, netball and rugby teams in the IMG league which takes place on a Wednesday afternoon. IMG provides the ideal demonstration that Societies are not just about drinking and puts a competitive edge to being in a society.
The list of Societies is endless, as is the choice but whatever society you join you are guaranteed an introduction to a whole new circle of friends, interests and places to drink/vomit.
