Every year Cardiff University and Swansea University compete for the Welsh Varsity Trophy. The Welsh Varsity match is second only in size to the Oxford and Cambridge game, and this year's spectacle will be held at Cardiff Arms Park 23th April 2008.

The Varsity match is a day out for every Cardiff student whether you're sporting or not. The day time sees over 20 sports teams from Cardiff and Swansea Universities competing against each other with the evening seeing the showpiece rugby fixture that last year attracted 5,200 students at Cardiff Arms Park.

Introduction to Varsity

The Inaugural Welsh Varsity Match was first played in 1987 and has gone from strength where last year over 5200 students attended and featured on national television. For a more detailed history click here

In the early evening on Wednesday 23rd April the biggest sporting event in Cardiff University’s calendar kicks off….

Cardiff and Swansea universities nominate warriors to clash on the rugby field, fighting for the glory and victory of their people.

Two teams one dream…

They battle it out to be crowned the Varsity Cup winners of 2008. This showpiece event is held at Cardiff Arms Park next to the Millennium Stadium, where last year 5,200 students watched Cardiff narrowly miss out to Swansea.

This time its personal……

All students have a part to play in supporting our champions, wear red, make banners, and ensure our team can hear us!

Varsity Shield 2008

The Welsh Varsity Match is the culmination of a day of sporting activity where up to and over a 1000 students from the two Universities compete for the Varsity Trophy. Where over the day twenty of Cardiff and Swansea top sports teams go head to head in the historical ‘Clash of the Titans’ in a bid to become the Varsity Trophy winners, where whoever wins the most games is hailed the winner of the Varsity Shield, which Cardiff have won every year since the competition began in 2002!
