Cardiff Cruise into Semis
Women's BUSA 1st Round 13.12.03Cardiff University 8-1 Bristol University
Gloucestershire University 2-29 Cardiff University
Cardiff sent out a warning to the rest of BUSA as they easily qualified for the semi-finals with comprehensive victories over Bristol and Gloucestershire.
Following their 21-1 thrashing of UWIC, Cardiff produced two more outstanding shows of goalscoring excellence to top their first round group.
The first game saw Cardiff overcome Bristol with a well organised performance. This victory meant they had already qualified before the final game was played, however this didn't mean they took it lightly. Cardiff were superior in every department as they trounced Gloucestershire 29-2, a record victory for the women's team.
Cardiff now eagerly await the draw for the semi-finals, in which they will feel they have every chance of qualifying for their second finals in three years.
They join Edinburgh, Sheffield, Loughborough, Warwick and Bristol as teams already qualified for the semis. UWIC were knocked out after they lost to Bristol.
More Shocks in Men's Competion
The 2003/04 Mens BUSA continues to produce shock results, with two of last years finalists already eliminated from the competion.Loughborough were knocked out as London and Oxford qualified from Group C and Nottingham were knocked out by Birmingham and Sheffield. However the biggest shock in Group B was Birmingham's victory over BUSA champions Sheffield to win the group. Anyone who saw Birmingham's humiliation against Cardiff at St Athan earlier this season would hardly believe it was possible.
It sends out a warning to Cardiff and Bristol not to under-estimate lowly Exeter when they play the 1st round on the 31st of January.
The teams already qualified for the semi-fianls are; Newcastle, Leeds, Birmingham, Sheffield, Oxford and London.
