CARDIFF UNIVERSITY RAMBLING CLUB

Welcome to the Summer Semester Walking Programme!

Come and join us to get some fresh air and exercise as well as seeing plenty of the UK. We cater for everyone, from beginner walkers to experienced mountaineers. We currently run two walks every weekend: one on a Saturday, and generally a more challenging one on a Sunday. In the past 18 months we have climbed Ben Nevis and camped on the shores of Loch Lomond, ploughed through the snow on Kinder Scout, prowled about on Dartmoor Moor, experienced a full Christmas meal in the Pembrokeshire national park and scaled Snowdon. Our annual climax is our week long summer trip, and this year we will be heading to the Lake District.

General Notes:

Cost of joining the club is £10, and this remains the same throughout the year. You can join at anytime throughout the year, just pop along to any one of our events to signup. Probably the best time to signup is on a Tuesday evening at 6pm in the TV lounge where we do the Sunday walk signups.

All members must get an AU Card, and please bring it with them on walks. If they don't, then they risk not being covered by the AU insurance if anything would happen.

Proper walking kit is expected on walks. Most stuff can be bought quite cheaply, and it needn't be expensive. Our most important rules are please don't walk in Jeans or Trainers.

Jeans can get wet, and when they do they get very heavy, and very sore and painful. They are also not very warm against the wind. It doesn't have to be proper walking trousers, as even jogging/tracksuit bottoms will do. Just not jeans.

Trainers do not give enough support at the ankle when walking, and twisted ankles are a common occurence for people not wearing the right footwear. Walking boots can come as cheaply as about £30, and depending on how much you plan to go walking links to how much you should probably spend on a pair. Also most walking boots tend to be more waterproofed than trainings, and there's nothing worse than having to walk with soaking wet slushy feet (trust me - I know!)
