TRAINING
When is it?
Cardiff University training is run on Wednesdays and Sundays from 6pm 'til 8pm in the Old Hall of Talybont Sports Centre.Who runs training?
Training is run by former Welsh coach Terry Matthews, who as a student coached Cardiff University to Busa gold in 2001. In circumstances where training is split, first team captain and fully qualified coach Jack McNamara assists. What happens at training?
As most people who join the club have never heard of korfball, the first months of training are geared toward teaching newcomers to the sport all the neccessary skills from scratch, and developing a firm knowledge of the rules.Typically the first 20 minutes will involve some fitness work, to improve the pace and stamina of players, and also to act as a warm up.
After stretching the next 40-50 minutes will be dedicated to korfball drills and exercises. These may include further fitness work, ball handling, tactics, korfball drills, or technical development.
The remaining training time will be devoted to games, where players will be encouraged to put to use the skills they have learnt in a match environment. Coaching and assessment will be provided throughout the games to help develop both the squad and individuals.
