The Quiz - Are Korfballers smart or just lucky?

by Bren Coopey

We were meant to be playing a match, but a mistake by the Athletic Union meant that we had no where to play and no where to train. It was a Sunday evening and, for the first time since the start of term, we had no Korfball. We were free to do what we pleased but when Donna and Amy mentioned that we could take part in the Student Union Quiz at the Taf bar, we jumped at the chance. Could a team of well-oiled professional Korfball players do well in a quiz? And if the answer is yes, could a team of inexperienced, student lay-about Korfball players like us do well in a quiz? The answer was yes.

With the quiz due to begin about 7:30, we arranged to meet about 7pm. So Lou and I arrived with a friend at about 6:15 to grab seats- we had plenty to choose from, which meant we grabbed one of those long seats along the back wall which would provide both room and comfort. If we'd already started drinking, we would obviously not have been thinking like that.

As members of the Korfball team arrived and a few friends appeared, we realised we had enough people for two teams of about 9, which meant more chance of winning a prize- any prize would do.

Between us we had experts in Sport, experts in current affairs (well, newsround is on before neighbours, so that counts), experts in film, experts in alcohol (no round on this, but we drank a lot of it) and I bought some crisps. As the rounds came and went we found ourselves answering the questions with relative ease, but we didn't quite realise how well we were doing. When we actually won a round and got awarded 6 bottles of Grolsch, we were very excited.

The night was full of laughs for both teams, with jokes being exchanged, stories being told, questions being answered and heads being scratched. When the final rounds had finished, we waited for the results with baited breath. The quiz master read out the names of all the teams except the top three. One of our teams was among them, with the highest runner-up score. We all laughed at the prospect that one of our teams had ended up in the top three- surely we had missed the name. We waited as third and second prizes were given out and then our team name appeared as the winners. We had won a fridge, a red bull fridge with an incredible storage capacity and a crate of Grolsch to start filling it up with. We were shocked and in hysterics as we agreed on who should keep the fridge. Who would look after it properly? Who would keep it working? Who didn't live in Halls? Who would be willing to have Korfball parties on a regular basis? The answer came in the form of Nathan, who quickly agreed to have it with the quiz master whilst we all debated the issue at hand.

Yes, the legend of the Korfball fridge begins here. You have heard the story, now be a part of the team and use the almighty fridge- our most treasured trophy.
