Friendly vs Cardiff City

The first game of the year saw Cardiff University field a team consisting of half returning players and also half new players visit the Cardiff City team for an early friendly. The game was played in a very friendly spirit and saw City also take the opportunity to field new players.

The game started with Uni charging into a well deserved lead. Goals from Grace and Ceri, quickly followed by Breese's first ever goal for Cardiff took Uni into a 3-0 lead, with City looking a little surprised. Uni were playing at a frenetic pace, which the new City players seemed unable to cope with. Things got even better for Uni as Matt scored to take the lead to 4-0. Then City brought on the big guns in the form of Susan Belfourd, Sian Hunt and Elaine Hutchings, all of which were members of last years Uni 1st Team and have over 12 years Korfball experience between them. Ramzi just about had time to put in a now very familiar downtowner, before the City team started to fire. Four goals by Susan, Elaine and Josh brought the game to a close half-time score of 5-4.

The second half saw City put on more freshers, and Uni try and slow the pace down a little. Early goals again from Grace and Ceri saw the lead stretched to 7-4, before City again came back with a couple of late goals as tiredness started to show among the Uni players. Among the Uni freshers, Amy, Craig and Mim were all very unlucky not to have scored a goal, though they created several opportunities. Elle showed her potential as a superb defender in taking on and frustrating very experienced opposition throughout the game.

The final score saw Uni winning by 7-5 before heading straight down to the pub for a few drinks. Coaches Matt and Grace must be pleased by the promise showed by the new players who hadn't even heard of Korfball three weeks previously!
