League Game vs Bristol City (Home)
Team: Ramzi Barbir (c), Craig Dyer, Grace Stimpson, Donna Waitt, Harry Davies; Matt Cook, James Breese, Annett Lloyd Jones, Kristina van Eker, Ulrike Schmerwitz. The first league match saw Cardiff Uni host the Bristol City team. The team's spirit was high before the start of the match and expectations were high too. For most players this was the first non-freshers game.
Excitement slowly died out as Bristol City didn't show up at the official starting time. Five minutes turned into ten, then twenty and finally thirty minutes before the game finally got underway.
The two teams started well with a couple of quick goals. Defence was tight on both teams and scoring became more of a challenge afterwards. The boys running around the court trying to take shots prooved difficult, so the girls took the challenge of doing the hard work. This resulted in Kristina scoring a running in shot and Grace scoring several times from far away. Everytime Cardiff scored, Bristol City would answer back with a goal. The game carried on this way with a pretty tight score.
During half time, Cardiff got together and reflected on the errors made throughout the first period. Substitutions were made at half time, hoping it would improve game tactics. The second half saw many less goals scored. The score, hanging at 9 - 7 in the favour of Bristol City, stayed unchanged throughtout most of the second period.
Three minutes before the end of the match, Kristina's running in shot attempt turned into a penalty as she was fouled. Unfortunatly, this attempt also turned ugly when she sprained her ankle and fell to the floor. Remaining immobile and receiving treatment on the floor took a whole ten minutes. Both team's players were by then cold. Captains of both teams decided it would be unsuitable to carry on playing and time was also against Cardiff (hall was to be vacated).
Both teams decided to call it a day and therefore the end result was a unfortunate 9 - 7 loss for Cardiff. If Bristol had arrived on time, there would have been enough time to complete the entire game. If the penalty had been scored, the one goal gap would have been possible to recover... if... if... if...
