CODE OF CONDUCT 2003-2004

INTRODUCTION

This document is aimed at laying out the structure, safety issues and code of conduct of the Cardiff University Men's Hockey Club. The included items are intended to act as guidelines to our members, and as such should be adhered to whenever possible.

In order to fulfil our commitment to the safety of our members, the Men's Hockey Club considers it good practice to act in accordance with the following guidelines.

What follows has been produced by the Ladies Hockey Club in association with the AU Development Co-ordinator and the Welsh Hockey Association and has been adopted by the Men's Hockey Club.

(1) EQUIPMENT

1.1 The ball must conform to the Welsh Hockey Association Rules. The captain should make sufficient practice balls available for all matches.
1.2 Hockey sticks used for matches must conform to the Welsh Hockey Union Rules.
1.3 Shoes worn on artificial playing surface must either be trainers (with sufficient running support) or Astroturf boots. Flat-soled shoes should be worn for any indoor hockey.
1.4 Outfield players are advised to wear shin guards together with a well fitting mouth guard to protect against serious injury. Gloves are also advisable.
1.5 Goalkeepers must wear a helmet which must be well fitted and secured by straps, when on pitch for practice and games. Goalkeepers must also wear adequate leg guards kickers, gauntlet gloves and ensure all vital areas, heart, kidneys and groin, are adequately protected at all times.
1.6 The club is responsible for providing all goalkeeping equipment up to a sufficiently high standard. Care and maintenance of this equipment is the responsibility of those using it. The Club Safety/ Equipment Officer should be advised of nay damaged/ worn-out kit so that replacements may be bought.
1.7 Wet and damp kit should not be placed back in the bag without being thoroughly dried first. All kit of this kind is to be packed away into a goal-keeping bag placed in the secure locker supplied by Talybont Sports Centre.
1.8 All goal nets should be maintained and checked for any tears or holes on a regular basis by the sports department. Any damage should be reported to Talybont staff.
1.9 Any breakage, loss or damage to any equipment supplied by the hockey club should be reported immediately to a senior member of the hockey club committee. This is to ensure that any repairs to replacements are carried out before the equipment can be used again, thus preventing any unnecessary accidents.
1.10 The purchasing of any club equipment is the concern of the club committee, so that an appropriate level of expenditure may be established for the individual cases.

(2) CONTROL OF PRACTICE AND GAMES

2.1 All the possible and appropriate dangers of any exercise will be made clear to those taking part, before practice commences, by the captain or coach.
2.2 Play should be carried out in a controlled environment, with the rules of the game being strictly adhered to.
2.3 When practice is taking place, care should be given to allow sufficient space for the practice and between groups.
2.4 When shooting at goal the retrieval of balls should be monitored. Those retrieving balls should be made aware of the danger of play still going on.
2.5 All hockey related practice and skills should be taught safely and professionally by a qualified coach.

(3) RULES TO PREVENT INJURY DURING CLUB ACTIVITES

GENERAL PRECAUTIONS

3.1 Appropriate kit i.e. Astro boots, shin guards, gum shields etc. should be worn at all times. It is the individuals' responsibility to ensure they do so.
3.2 Those taking part should ensure that they carry out a sufficient warm up and down.
3.3 The rules of the game issued under the authorisation of the International Hockey Rules Board should be observed at all time.
3.4 Special attention should be paid to novices/ beginners in practices and game situations to ensure that dangerous use of stick does not occur.
3.5 Spectators must always be made aware of play taking place. They should be advised to remain outside the pitch area.
3.6 All those taking part must maintain visual awareness at all times.
3.7 A fully stocked medical kit (stocked by the AU) must be present at all matches and practices.
3.8 It is the responsibility of the club to ensure that a qualified first aider is present at every match. Each year, representatives from each team will be sent on first aid courses organised through the AU.
3.9 Some form of transport (minibus or car) should be present at every match in case of more serious injury.
3.10 In cases of serious injury, beyond the capability of the first aider present, an ambulance will be called and the sports centre notified on its arrival.
3.11 In all cases of injury an accident report form will be completed and taken to the AU.

(4) CODE OF CONDUCT

4.1 Ensure that you are a registered member of the athletic union and possess an AU card in order to be covered and registered for insurance.
4.2 Ensure that your hockey stick is fit for use - free from splinters and cracks.
4.3 Have consideration for other pitch users, with regards to timing and leaving the pitch in the condition you find it.
4.4 Never mix hockey with alcohol or drugs.
4.5 Always accept the umpire's decision as final.
4.6 In the spirit of the game, matches should be played even if a playing under protest form has been drawn up.

(5) COMMITTEE RESPONSIBILITIES

5.1 Chairman - responsible for the overall running of the club.
5.2 Secretary - responsible for the organisation of matches, the booking of minibuses and working in the Union alongside the Chairman for the club organisation.
5.3 Treasurer - responsible for club finances.
5.4 Club Captain - responsible for the club kit and sponsorship.
5.5 Umpire Secretary - organises umpires for the matches.
5.6 Social Secretary - responsible for the organisation of social events and encouraging the interaction of club members.
5.7 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Team Captains - responsible for the organisation of their team.
5.8 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Team Vice Captain - responsible for assisting their captains.
5.9 Health and Safety Officer - responsible for the safeguard of each club member's safety and well being.

(6) FACILITIES

6.1 Synthetics pitches should reach the minimum standards laid down by the FIH. Use and maintenance of these pitches should be in accordance with 'Artificial Turf Pitches of Hockey' published by the Sports Council 1990.
6.2 Any equipment surrounding the pitch area relating to other sports and activities must be stored well out of harms way whilst hockey is in progress.
6.3 Attention should be given to appropriate run-off-distances at the sides of the pitch.
6.4 Construction and maintenance of appropriate boundaries and fences must be observed. The boundary fence must be of sufficient height so that lifted balls are not in danger of causing injury to people or surrounding structures.
6.5 Floodlighting should be fully functional and used in conditions of poor lighting and night practices.
