Cheer Terms
Just a few terms so that you can all understand what we are talking about (seriously, its not another language).Base: The person(s) at the bottom of a stunt.
Chant: A short and snappy yell (eg "Cardiff-clap-clap-clap-Cobras") often repeated three times and used often during the game.
Cheer: a long chant, normally not repeated. Cheers are a way to introduce the team/squad, or say something about the team/squad (eg Red, Black And White, Hot To Go etc).
Elevator: A stunt that involves the flyer having each of her feet in the hands of her 2 bases.
Flyer: The flyer is the person at the top of the stunt. The flyer need to be very strong in order to help the bases and must always hold themselves tight with limbs locked.
Pom Pom: The accessories of cheerleading! They are fluffy balls held in each hand. They are team colours and often have metallic strips.
Spirit: The enthusiasm that is essential to ALL cheerleaders! Done at the end of EVERY cheer or chant. Includes calling out the team name ("Go Cobras!!"), jumping up and down, mad pom waving and high kicks.
Straddle Lift: A stunt where the flyer is sat upright with their legs spread into a V shape.
Stunts: An important part of cheerleading, stunting usually involves lifting one or more people in the air (eg Straddle, liberty or elevator Lift).
Thigh Stand: A low stunt where the flyer stands on the bent legs of two bases.
Arm Movements
Bow & Arrow: One arm is out in a T and the other is in a broken T. If its to the left, it is the left arm in the T and vice versa for the right.High V: both arms are up in the air with the hands in fists but out to 45 degree angles.
Low V: The same but with the arms pointing down.
Touchdown: The arms straight up in a fist with pinkies facing out.
Low Touchdown: The same as Tuchdown but with the arms down in front and with thumbs facing out.
L (Right or Left): the arm on the side you're going to is out at 180 degrees to the body and the other arm is at 90 degrees to that to form the L.
K (right or left): the arm on the side you're going to is up in a high V and the other arm is in a Low V but diagonally across the body.
T: arms straight out at 180 degrees to the body. Thumbs are facing forward.
Broken T: the same but with fists together and elbows bent in front of the body. Pinkies are facing out.
