Cardiff Tournament
The day started bright and early (as well as bloody freezing) with the rousing the Talybont Staff. Then as the 12 teams competing in the tournament assembled, we realised that the hall was actually colder than the outside. Straight to the first round of pool games then and trying to warm the place up a bit! Cardiff Uni fielded two teams made up of a mix of experienced and new players.Cardiff Devils: Ceri Jones (c), Ramzi Barbir, Matt Cook, James Breese, Simon Golds, Annett Lloyd Jones, Elle Huish, Heather Ferguson, Amy Miskell, Amy Shillabeer, Ulrike Schmerwitz, Mim Jenns
Cardiff Dragons: Donna Waitt (c), Grace Stimpson, Harry Davies, Amy Shillabeer, Caroline Lowdon, Amy Miskell, Matt Cook, Craig Dyer, James Breese, Simon Golds, Ceri Jones
(Somehow miraculously, a few players managed to replicate themselves on the day and play for two teams!!). The Devils got off to a very promising start with three quick goals and a very composed performance proving too much for a rather cold Nottingham side. The Dragons also played very well in managing a draw against Oxford. The rest of the pool games saw the Devils lose against a good Bristol side and then manage a very credible draw thanks to goals from Ramzi and Heather against a very experienced Cardiff City side. The Devils therefore finished second in their group and proceeded to the quarterfinals. The Dragons second game also ended up in a draw thanks to goals from freshers Breezy and Harry. Their third game then ?
The quarterfinals held in the afternoon saw the Devils pitted against Cardiff City again. Another close game saw the Devils eventually lose to the eventual tournament winners. The Dragons faced Bristol 2 in their quarterfinal, which was possibly the most hotly contested game of the whole tournament. In a very intense game, Bristol grabbed a 1-0 lead after a long period of frustration for both sides. The Bristol supporters by this time were being outshouted by the Cardiff uni supporters mostly consisting of Captain G and his league of extraordinary G-men. A goal from Harri saw the Dragons equalise and the game suddenly turned on its head when Breese scored in the first attacking chance. Bristol however scored an equaliser just before the final whistle, which meant that there had to be penalties. The least said about those, the better.
The day finished with two further games for both the Devils and the Dragons, which saw the two teams end up in 8th and 5th place respectively.
