Jobs and Skills
One of our big aims is to help you become more employable during your time in Cardiff. Having a CV that stands out from the rest is important. We offer a range of courses in skills development, opportunities to volunteer in the community, and the chance to gain work experience while you study.
We also know that most students need a part time job to help them through student life. Our Unistaff Jobshop offers a dedicated service for students looking to find temporary work that fits around their studies.
Centre for Skills, Enterprise and Volunteering
The brand new centre opened in September 2012 to provide a a one-stop-shop for employability services for our students, comprising the Skills Development Service (formerly Student Development Unit), Student Enterprise and Student Volunteering Cardiff. The Skills Development Service is supported by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP.
This multi-functional space provides the perfect working environment to ensure that our students leave university with much more than a degree. All three student services help provide additional training, qualification and experience.
The Skills Development Service works with students to bolster their transferable skills offering courses such as leadership, communication and personal effectiveness. The
Service will, from this year, be offering programmes accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management.
Also based in the Centre is Student Volunteering Cardiff (SVC), an independent student-led charity which supports around 1000 students to volunteer on projects in and around the Cardiff area. Established in 1971, SVC works with the elderly, the homeless and those with physical or learning disabilities on short and long-term projects. It is estimated that annually SVC volunteers contribute more than £40,000 to the local economy.
Student Enterprise Cardiff aims to inspire students to generate and act upon their ideas, offering a practical mix of expertise, guest speakers and start-up support. The service attracts more than 2000 students a year, working with them to establish new business or social ventures. They also offer workshops on self employment for those interested in enterprise and small business.
