Q. What do I need to become a new Society?
A. If you have a Society that isn't similar to our current Societies then it's easy to set up a new Society. You need to put together a committee with at least a President, Treasurer and Secretary. You also need to decide upon your clear aims and objectives and the purpose of your Society. You will then need to find 20 students who are interested in your Society and ask for their names and student numbers. You will then need to check the website in April for the Society Application form and fill this in. You will be asked to apply for a Society email address, webpage and you have to carry out risk assessments on your Society.
Q. What is the bilingual policy in the Students' Union and how does this relate to Societies?
A. The bilingual policy ensures that the Union gives equal status to the English and Welsh languages. Anything your Society may wish to put up for public display around the building, must be in both English and Welsh. The Union does have its very own welsh translator. Email him directly at robertsh@cardiff.ac.uk
Q. How can a Society display something on a noticeboard?
A. Societies now have their very own noticeboard space in the TV lounge on the 3rd Floor of the Union. A Society can book on of these out from the Societies Area for two weeks at a time. Contact morrise2@cardiff.ac.uk for more information.
Q. Do Societies have insurance?
Yes. Societies have full insurance which includes puclic liability insurance. If you are planning an event or trip, please contact Sally Airey on aireys1@cardiff.ac.uk so she can inform the insurance company. This will make the claim process easier if an incident does occur.
Q. Can Societies advertise on the plasma screens around the building?
A. Societies can use the plasma screens free of charge if they are having an event in the Union building. You must send the poster you want displayed to soml@cardiff.ac.uk. External events can only be advertised on the TV lounge noticeboards.
Q. How does a Society organise an event in the Students' Union
A. The meeting rooms can be booked for free at the main reception desk with a Society room-booker's card. To book CF10, Solus or the Great Hall, you must contact Tracey Bishop at bishopt1@cardiff.ac.uk
