RUGBY at Cardiff University
The purpose of this statement is to make everyone participating in full contact rugby understand that due to the nature of the activity we believe it should be performed at a reasonable level of safety and fully insured.
A risk assessment of rugby at Cardiff University concluded that any contact rugby was deemed unsafe without legitimate officials.
To qualify as a safe rugby activity the referees need to be appointed by of the Welsh Rugby Union. This means that the activity and the participants would be fully insured.
The only rugby facilitated by the Athletic Union and Cardiff University is in BUSA competition. This is either the Cardiff Men's, Cardiff Women's and Cardiff Medics teams. Any other competitions or games will be unofficial and are not supported or insured by the University or the Athletic Union.
In our opinion the person organising the activity may be held accountable for the activity.
Use of Facilities
The use of University sports facilities for unofficial full contact rugby activities will not be permitted.
The University has a long term rental agreement with the Council for four pitches (two rugby and two football) at Pontacanna. They are located on the right hand side as you come off the footbridge from the Talybont side of the river. The use of these pitches is for AU organised and sanctioned activities.
For a temporary period while there is no IMG rugby programme and subject to the above pitches not being required for AU organised activities, limited recreational use will be permitted, however only under the strict adherence to the following conditions.
1. The pitch must be booked in advance at the University Sports Centre - Talybont.
2. Any rugby related activities must be non contact in nature, be it training or game related. i.e. touch rugby only. The responsibility for ensuring these conditions are met will lie with organisers and individual participants.
It is anticipated that an IMG touch rugby programme will commence within a few weeks and at that time the above temporary recreational access arrangement will be reviewed.
