How can I find accommodation?

The University produces a private landlord list which is available on line at www.cardiff.ac.uk follow the links to Residences & Catering and Private Sector Accommodation. You can use a letting agency, but only use one that is ALMA registered. ALMA agents are listed in the back of the Housing booklet available from the Advice & Representation Centre. Adverts in the Students Union.

My landlord/lady keeps letting him/herself into my house, what can I do about it?

You have the right to 24 hours written notice of a visit from your landlord/lady. If this is not adhered to come to the Advice & Representation Centre for assistance.

How do I get my bond back?

If your bond is not returned within a reasonable time, you should write to the landlord asking for its return. If the money is still not forthcoming, legal action using the County Court may be required. Come into the Advice & Representation Centre for more information on this.

Do I need a TV licence?

Yes. However, if you have a joint tenancy agreement you will only need one licence irrespective of how many TV’s are in the house. If you have individual agreements, you will then need a separate licence. You will also need a licence in Halls, but some have a blanket licence. Check with the Residences Manager.

Am I liable to pay Council Tax?

If you are a full time registered student you will not be liable and you will received an exemption certificate from the University during November. NB you will not receive a certificate if you are living in university accommodation.

How do I obtain a Shengen Visa?

You can collect an application form and information about applying for a Shengen visa from the Advice & Representation Centre.

How can I find a job whilst at University?

You can visit the Unistaff JobShop on the ground floor Mall at the Students’ Union Building (Park Place) and register with the staff there. For more information about the services provided by the JobShop please click here.

How do I register with Unistaff JobShop?

  • Home Students: Hand your Student ID and NI card, Passport or P45 to a member of staff in the JobShop, who will enter your details into the computer.
  • International Students: Hand your Student ID and Passport to a member of staff in the JobShop.

As an international student, am I allowed to work?

You are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and any number of hours during vacation.

How do I claim my tax back?

You can obtain a form for tax repayment, and get help in completing it at the Advice & Representation Centre.

Am I entitled to help with medical charges?

If you are in Wales and under the age of 25 you are exempt from paying for prescriptions for medication and dental treatment. Those over 25 may be exempt on the grounds of low income. The application form is available from the Advice & Representation Centre.

Can I drive on my International Driving Licence?

If you are coming to study in the UK for more than 12 months you may only drive on your valid foreign licence or international driving permit for a period of 12 months from the date you first arrived in Britain to take up your studies. After 12 months you will need to pass a driving test before the 12 months period elapses. Licences issued by an EEA country and certain other countries have different procedures. Check with the Advice & Representation Centre for current information.

What is the Student Development Programme?

Student Development is an area that is becoming more and more relevant to students in Higher Education. It places great value on the skills that you learn outside your academic study and aims to reward you for developing them. This can range from working behind the bar in your student union to taking part in specifically organised training sessions.

Is there any charge for attending courses in the Student Development” Programme?

A deposit of £20.00 when applying. Most courses are free although small charges apply to join 1st Aid, Sign Language and Welsh courses.
