Tennis Club

**UPDATED FOR THE 23/24 ACADEMIC YEAR**

One of Cardiff University’s biggest clubs with 250+ members and 8 BUCS teams!

After COVID–19 has disrupted the last two years, Cardiff University Tennis are back and raring to go!

Social Tennis

Players of any ability are welcome, whether you’re an experienced player or have never picked up a racket before! Our social league, which runs every Wednesday 12-4:30pm is a great opportunity to have a hit both casually and competitively. We provide tennis balls throughout the year and also have a number of rackets to lend out as well. This is run by our Social League Manager, who will find you an opponent and record match results onto an online spreadsheet updated weekly. At our Annual General Meeting at the end of the Spring Semester there are prizes for those at the top of the league!

In addition to this, we have a session from 4:30-7:30pm on a Sunday evening, the perfect way to end the weekend! Feel free to come along with your friends for a hit! If there is interest, then some of the committee members (many of whom are qualified coaches) will run some fun group games.

Every Wednesday, lessons are ran for all levels for only a few pounds - great if you are just starting tennis. These are availble to buy on the Tennis club page weekly.

All this takes place at our associate tennis club, Cardiff Lawn Tennis Club, which is located in the centre of Cardiff by the Castle, just a 5/10 minute walk from the Student's Union. The club has 11 courts of mixed surfaces –  4 acrylic, 4 hard court and 3 brand new artificial clay courts! The clubhouse has a bar and serves hot food, as well as offering stringing services and cheap rackets.

If you need equipment, then we have great links with local business and if you need restringing there are several members who string for the cheapest rates you can find!

We also play Social/Development team matches against Cardiff Met a couple times a term, which gives a good oppotunity to play competetive tennis!

Team Tennis

Cardiff University is becoming a recognised high performance tennis University – building credibility year by year. Our team ethos is for inclusion of team players through squad training sessions and refreshed weekly team allocations. Our fixtures take place on Wednesday at House of Sport (next door to premier league side Cardiff City's stadium), Ocean Park Arena, with some matches also being played at Heath Park.

We have had some great success over the last year with promotions from the men's and ladies' team. We hope to continue the impressive and growing success over the last 5 years and use this year to improve even more. There will also be opportunities to do coaching courses and coach other members of the society too. Come and be a part of our team and we will prove that tennis is no longer an individual sport.

Socials

Wednesday night socials define sports societies at Cardiff and the Tennis Club know how to do it right. We have had so much success over the past years and last year we had an incredible 110 people turn up to our first 'tennis whites' social at our home of The Taf (the Cardiff Uni pub). It is a great way for both social and team members to get together! Throughout the year we journey through the weird and wonderful in terms of themes for socials and hold plenty of non-alcoholic events and socials as well. This year we are going to improve things even more for our 150+ members! On top of wacky fancy dress, we will be hosting a series of games and activities to help everyone's night along in the traditional way.

Cardiff Lawn Tennis Club is located next to Bute Park and we have great access to using this area for controlled society meet-ups which is a big bonus too!

Socials are a great way to meet new people! Everyone there shares a common interest! They are a great way to find new hitting partners and meet new friends!

Sponsorship

We are proud to have 'Yolo' as our official sponsor this year! We will be holding many of our socials there (and gain free entry into YOLO before 11pm!)

Lessons

Between 12-4pm on a Wednesday afternoon the club offers beginner and intermediate tennis lessons, each guaranteed to have a maximum of 8 players. These lessons are run by John Williams, the head coach of Cardiff Lawn Tennis Club and one of the most talented coaches in the country, winning the prestigious Welsh Coach of the Year award as well as coaching several national standard players and numerous county and regional players as well. These lessons are available to purchase on the CUTC website from the Sunday evening before the coming Wednesday for just £3! Considering the standard of coaching available and the massive improvement often shown over the year by people who attend regularly, this is an opportunity not to be missed! Lessons will come off the website every Tuesday at midday so make sure you book on before then!

The Committee

CUTC is run by an elected committee of 16 members (8 General, 8 Captains) who ensure the club runs smoothly and handle things such as socials, finance and court bookings and training and social tennis. This year's committee members are listed at the bottom of this page. If you have any questions about joining the club or just about life as a Cardiff Uni student in general, then feel free to give any one of us a message on Instagram or Facebook. We look forward to meeting you all in September!

REFUND POLICY

People seeking a refund must contact the President, who will then present their case to the rest of the committee for consideration. Each request will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
