Cari's role is to oversee the successful running of sports clubs and teams within the Athletic Union at Cardiff University. This includes designating club budgets, organising AU Council and the AGM, as well as putting on events such as Varsity, Dodgeball Tournaments and the AU Awards.
Introducing Cari
I graduated from Cardiff University’s EUROP school in 2012, having studied European Politics and International Relations. I have been a member of the Athletic Union since my very first Freshers Fayre, when I joined Cardiff University Rowing Club. I became heavily involved with the AU during my final year of study as Senior Womens’ Captain, and was elected Athletic Union President in March 2012.
As a result of my experience as a committee member of an AU club, I understand the difficulties clubs often face. I hope to use my tenure as Athletic Union President to work towards practical solutions for such problems, as well as putting on a host of accessible and enjoyable events.
Cari’s Objectives
I have always been involved in sport of some kind and fully appreciate the important role it can have in the student experience at Cardiff University. By continuing to demonstrate the impact sport can have, and through this year’s Invest in Sport campaign, I will lobby the University for greater access to sports facilities for students.
My specific objectives for this role are as follows:
-
Tiering Structure: Developing a non- performance-based bronze, silver and gold tiering structure in which clubs are rewarded for general compliance, behaviour, proper maintenance of equipment, etc. A detailed description of what is required to achieve each standard will have been emailed to club committees. Those achieving gold at the end of each year will receive rewards specific to particular club needs, while those which continually fail to achieve bronze will face full club review.
-
Team Cardiff – Re-launching Team Cardiff in partnership with the Athletic Unions’ official kit supplier, Kukri. By creating a strong Team Cardiff brand, sponsorship for the Athletic Union will be easier to secure, which will in turn enable sponsorship money to go back into developing sport at Cardiff University.
-
IMG Sport – Carrying out an in-depth review of the IMG leagues at Cardiff University, as well as working with teams to find a solution to some of the issues faced in previous years. Restructuring the organisation and administration of IMG sport could lead to a more efficient and effective system, while paying more attention to the achievements of those who participate will highlight the importance of the programme.
-
BUCs Merger – Work with BUCs, NUS and other affected institutions to find a workable solution to the proposed Cardiff/Medics merger. I will be attending both regional and national meetings in order to develop possible solutions. Gemma Wheeler, the Medics Representative on the Athletic Union Executive Committee and I will work closely to ensure that all those affected remain informed regarding developments.
